The government has appointed Dr. Humaira Sultana, Additional Secretary (Aviation and CA) at the Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism, as the Managing Director (MD) and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Biman Bangladesh Airlines.
The ministry said Dr. Humaira Sultana has been given the additional charge of MD and CEO and will continue in the role until a permanent appointment is made. With this appointment, she becomes the first woman to hold the top executive position in the national flag carrier’s 54-year history.
The order also cancelled the contractual appointment of Biman’s immediate former MD and CEO, Dr. Md. Shafiqur Rahman, following his imprisonment in connection with criminal charges.
Police arrested Dr. Shafiqur Rahman and his wife on Monday over the alleged abuse of an 11-year-old domestic worker. The case was filed by the victim’s father, a hotel employee, under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act at Uttara West Police Station. A court later rejected their bail petitions and sent them to jail, said Sub-Inspector Romer Mia, the investigation officer. Dr. Md. Shafiqur Rahman was appointed Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Biman Bangladesh Airlines on September 4, 2024.
